Hello All,

Welcome to the 11th edition of the PQQ Newsletter. Last week, I was at a fundraiser event at City Hall(GLA), where I work within the education and youth team in my spare time to run projects and assist in the facilitation of events and youth participation. Also, last Friday I attended the Black Thrive away day to piece together a strategic plan of how to move the concept/idea forward. This week (19th March and 20th March) I will be attending 2 days mental health training at the GLA. Mental Health is an important issue that we all need to work together to tackle and help those who are in need especially those in crisis. I am definitely looking forward to learning more about mental health, the different components and how to tackle the issues around it.

At the end of the month, I will be heading to Palermo, Italy for 2 weeks to capture and engage young people with additional needs in different activities.

Lambeth European Social Fund(ESF) Community Grant

On 19 February 2018 we launched the 2014-2020 Lambeth European Social Fund (ESF) Community Grants Programme. We are now inviting local voluntary and community sector (VCS) organisations to bid for grants to help Lambeth residents with a disability or long-term health condition to find (or maintain) work. The programme is co-financed by Lambeth and the European Social Fund. The Grants Programme will address the root causes of poverty which create barriers to work, so more people move into - or at least closer to - work.

Responding to local residents’ needs

Local voluntary and community sector (VCS) organisations will deliver the ESF Community Grants Programme because they (in partnership with the Council) are best able to respond to the needs of local residents. The programme aims to fund up to four projects with up to £42,000 each, starting in July 2018.

What kind of project can get a grant?

To be eligible for a grant, projects must support Lambeth residents who are:

  • long-term unemployed or economically inactive (i.e. not actively seeking work).
  • 25 and older
  • disabled (self-declared)
  • at least 50% of the participants must be women and
  • 60% of participants Black or Minority Ethnic.
  • projects must run for a maximum of 18 months’ delivery, with a further three months to close the project (for some projects); and
  • must not duplicate any provision available through mainstream activity.

 How to apply

Lambeth Music Festival - 20th - 27th March

The Lambeth Music festival, which the Weekender is the media partner for. The festival takes place from March 20-27 in the Southbank Centre. Around 3000 children from the Lambeth Music Service take part in this festival, performing in Royal Festival Hall.

We’ve partnered with the event for the past few years, and also have a presence at the festival where we give out copies of the Lambeth Weekender to parents and visitors. As part of this, before the event, we send our photographers to every school participating to take pictures of the students and produce a guide, which is printed in the Weekender. During the festival, we’ll be at Royal Festival giving out free copies of the paper, which parents keep as a memento of the event.

This feature is a great opportunity for Lambeth Council departments like Fostering and others target scheme and services for families to reach Lambeth locals, particular parents with children aged 5-16 (infant, junior, primary, and senior). We distribute 20,000 copies of the Weekender free across Lambeth (available in all supermarkets, doctors, dentists, gyms, libraries, and more), and will give out 10,000 copies at the Southbank Centre from March 20-27.
